Special Pre-Show Casting Clinic


1:30p-4:00p – CASTING CLINICS with DAVE ROTHROCK, TOM SADLER, and DAVID CLEAVES, widely recognized professional casting instructors. Lead Clinic Instructor DAVE ROTHROCK, of the Salmo-Trutta Enterprises, was on the first place casting team in the Northeastern Qualifier of the 2004 National Fly Fishing Masters Tournament.

The 2.5 hour personal instruction clinic will be an extended opportunity to improve casting fundamentals and specialty techniques, and is not suited for beginners. The clinic will be taught indoors in the Hanley Center for Athletic Excellence at Georgetown Preparatory School. Bring your own rod, reel, and line. Fee $75.00. Continuous Activities

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS: Award-winning master fly tiers DAVE ROTHROCK, TOM BALTZ of Angling Adventures, Mt. Holly Springs, PA, and Capt. MIKE CRITZER will demonstrate fly-tying at their individual booths in the Exhibit Hall during the Show.

AUTHOR’S CORNER: A selection of fishing, fly-tying, and conservation books, videos, and DVDs will be on sale throughout the Show. Authors will be at the "Meet the Authors" booth as available to autograph and discuss their books.

GRAND SWEEPSTAKES RAFFLE: Be the lucky winner of one or more of 50 quality prizes, such as the grand prize, a guided Potomac River float trip for two with Mark Kovach Fishing Services. Tickets will be sold until the drawing begins at 5:05p. Donation: $5.00 per ticket, 3 for $10.00, and 10 for $20.00. (Winners need not be present but shipping costs will be charged if winning items are not picked up.)

EXHIBITOR BOTTLE RAFFLES: Each exhibitor will conduct a bottle raffle. Tickets $1.00 each, or 6 for $5.00. Drawing will begin at 4:45p. (Winners do not have to be present, but shipping costs will be charged if winning items are not picked up.)

SILENT AUCTION: Great items like guided fishing trips, fishing tackle, art works and much more at bargain prices. Auction closes at 4:40p. (Winners do not have to be present, but shipping costs will be charged if winning items are not picked up.)

9:00a-10:30a -- FLY–CASTING PERSONAL INSTRUCTION MASTER CLASS with MIKE LAWSON, nationally recognized expert fly casting instructor and author. Main Exhibit Hall. This 1.5 hour personal instruction master class will focus on casting fundamentals and troubleshooting casting problems, and is not suited for beginners. The class will be conducted indoors, and the number of class participants will be strictly limited. Bring your own rod, reel, and line. Fee $50. Advance registration and payment required. 10:30a–11:00a -- "Effective Casting," a FREE FLY CASTING DEMONSTRATION with DAVE ROTHROCK in the Main Exhibit Hall. Working hard to cast? Often too much effort produces too little cast. The effective cast doesn’t just look easy, it is easy. Learn from the master.

10:30a–11:30a -- CASTING FOR WOMEN with KIKI GALVIN. This one-hour personal instruction Fly-Casting Clinic will be held indoors in the Main Exhibit Hall. Fee $35. 10:30a-12:00p -- "Tying Saltwater Flies" a FLY-TYING MASTER CLASS with Capt. MIKE CRITZER in the Main Exhibit Hall. A 1.5-hour small master class with personal instruction by one of the region’s leading saltwater tyers and Chesapeake Bay and Mid-Atlantic Coast guides. The class includes materials for tying a selection of flies. Bring your own vice and tools. Basic fly-tying skills and tools required. Fee $50. Advance registration and payment required. 10:30a-11:20a -- “Smallmouth Bass Fishing: Practices and Places” with MARK KOVACH in the 1st Floor Film Room. The dean of Potomac River professional fishing guides will teach you what you need to know about “how to and where to” enjoy fishing for feisty smallmouth bass, especially in this area. Whether a novice or veteran smallmouth fisher, you’ll learn lots from a true bass master.

11:00a-11:50a -- "The 41st Parallel: Fishing Around the World" with JAMES PROSEK on 2nd Floor Multi-Purpose Room. Prosek invites us to relive his acclaimed book Fly-Fishing the 41st From Connecticut to Mongolia and Home Again: A Fisherman’s Odyssey, sharing his talents for colorful descriptions and images to bring to life his astonishing fishing adventure. Beginning in his hometown of Easton, Connecticut, he circumnavigates the globe along the 41st parallel, traveling through Spain, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, China, and Japan. Along the way he introduces you to some of the best fishing in the world and a host of wonderfully eccentric and memorable characters.

11:30a-12:20p -- “Yellowstone and Beyond” with MIKE LAWSON in the 1st Floor Film Room. The waters in Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding area provide vast fly fishing opportunities which could take a lifetime to sample. Each year Mike discovers new waters to fish, and he has been fishing this region for over 45 years. He knows well the famous rivers like the Yellowstone, Firehole, Gallatin, and Madison, but he will also introduce you to some of the lesser-known waters, including a select few of the many lakes and small streams.

11:30a-12:30p -- FREE FLY AND SPIN CASTING INSTRUCTION for YOUTH (16 and under). Main Exhibit Hall.

12:00p-12:50p -- "Fly Fishing 101" with DAVE ROTHROCK on 2nd Floor Multi-Purpose Room. There is no better way for a beginner or out-of-practice fly fisher to get grounded in the easy-to-use fundamentals of fly fishing. Focusing on the practical, Dave will take the mystery out of basic tackle, rigging, and what to do out on the water. Presented by one of the region’s best known and respected fly fishing guides and instructors.

12:00p-1:00p -- FREE BEGINNERS FLY-TYING INSTRUCTION. Main Exhibit Hall. Free basic one hour fly-tying instruction. Try your hand at learning to tie a fly. We bet you can tie a fly that will make fish think it's "fish food." Fly-tying tools and materials provided.

12:30p–1:00p -- “Improving Your Cast,” a FREE FLY CASTING DEMONSTRATION. DUSTY WISSMATH demonstrates easy-to-learn tips to help you improve some common mistakes frequently made by many of us. Main Exhibit Hall.

12:30p-1:20p -- "Bird, Butterfly, Eel" with JAMES PROSEK who will talk about his newest book. 1st Floor Film Room. Acclaimed the “Audubon of fish,” author and artist, James Prosek, shares his latest children’s book that opens our eyes to the amazing stories of the incredible migrations of birds, insects, and fish. All three spend their summers on the same coastal farm, but in the fall these common yet remarkable creatures journey to very distant and different places. Children of all ages will be enthralled by the wonders of nature and the joys of learning how to see, appreciate, and help to protect our wildlife and natural resources. This will be a magical opportunity for every member of the family.

1:00p-1:50p -- "Spring Creek Magic" with MIKE LAWSON on 2nd Floor Multi-Purpose Room. Many of our finest trout waters are spring fed or tailwater (flowing from a dam) streams. Both of these common water types share the same kind of aquatic insects, required fly patterns, and fishing techniques. This in-depth look at how to catch some of the most difficult of selective trout is presented by one of the nation’s leading angling experts.

1:30p-2:20p -- "Fly Fishing Virginia" with BEAU BEASLEY on 1st Floor Film Room. Beau has fished the varied waters of the Old Dominion since early childhood and knows them as only a native can. He will share his insider’s knowledge of Virginia fresh and saltwater fly fishing that ranges from the mountain brook trout streams of the Shenandoah National Park to the salty shores of the Chesapeake Bay. His presentation will introduce you to his appealing photos and helpful maps from his new book, Fly Fishing Virginia: A No Nonsense Guide to Top Waters.

1:30p-2:30p -- CASTING CLINIC with PROJECT HEALING WATERS with TOM SADLER; KIKI GALVIN ; DAVID CLEAVES and DUNCAN McGRATH . 2:00p-2:50p -- "Fishing the Chesapeake Bay from Top to Bottom" with Capt. MIKE CRITZER and Capt. CHRIS NEWSOME in the 2nd Floor Multi-Purpose Room. A "how-to" and "where-to" program on saltwater fly and light tackle fishing featuring two of the region’s leading Chesapeake Bay and Mid-Atlantic coastal guides. What you need to know about fishing the Bay from the Susquehanna flats to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

2:00p–2:30p -- “Finding Your Casting Groove,” a FREE FLY CASTING DEMONSTRATION with MIKE LAWSON. Our master instructor headliner gives a casting lesson for all fly casters, regardless of skill level or experience containing practical knowledge to help us learn to cast better.

2:00p-3:00p -- FREE KIDS FLY-TYING INSTRUCTION. Free basic one hour fly-tying instruction in the Exhibit Hall. Try your hand at learning to tie a fly. We bet you can tie a fly that will make fish think it's "fish food." Fly-tying tools and materials provided.

Join an informal conversation with internationally-acclaimed author and artist, James Prosek, to explore the importance of experiencing and sharing an appreciation of the commonplace marvels of nature, as well as the exotic. Will we meet the challenge of exposing others, especially the next generation, to our enjoyment and appreciation of the value of nature? What is our responsibility to reach out, to teach and pass it on? Can we really have an impact on the future of our planet?

Mike will present his basic fly fishing strategies for nymphs, wet flies, streamers, and dry flies with photographs and illustrations.

Popular and respected fishing guide, fly-tier, and author, Mike Heck, will give you an experienced insider’s tour of some of the many outstanding fishing destinations in his native south central Pennsylvania. His wide knowledge of Pennsylvania streams extends beyond his practical new book, Spring Creek Strategies: Hatches, Patterns, and Techniques. Mike will share what you need to know to regularly enjoy fishing the beautiful waters of our nearby neighbor to the north.

4:00p-4:50p -- "Fishing America’s Restored Rivers" with JOHN ROSS on 2nd Floor Multi-Purpose Room. The author of America’s 100 Best Trout Streams will take you fishing on some of the nation’s famous rivers celebrated in his new book, Rivers of Restoration: Trout Unlimited’s First 50 Years of Conservation. In teaching us how to fish these great streams, John will remind us of why we love the sound of running water, and why our natural resources need to be protected.
